FALCONS vs EAGLES: September 6, 2018
Pick: UNDER 45 POINTS -110
FALCONS vs EAGLES NFL football week 1 ANALYSIS
Here we go, another NFL season gets under way and we have a great matchup in this opening game on Thursday Night Football. The Atlanta Falcons will travel to Lincoln Financial Field to take on the reigning Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles took down the New England Patriots in a very high scoring 41-33 Superbowl a season ago but we should not expect to see even near as many points in this one. We are looking at 2 of the top 3 NFC defenses from last season in terms of points allowed. Both of these teams allowed under 20 points per game last year.
The Eagles are still without young star Quarterback Carson Wentz which definitely hurts the offense. Nick Foles will get the start for the Eagles after taking home Super Bowl MVP last season. I have to think what we saw in the Postseason last season from Foles won’t be repeated here. He has had a long offseason to cool off and he has not put up those kind of numbers since 2013. He will be without his best target Alshon Jeffery to start the year as well which will make things tougher. I think the Eagles could have trouble moving the ball here if Foles is not effective as Atlanta has a run defense that is strong enough to shut down the Eagles rushing attack if Foles cannot take the defensive focus off Jay Ajayi and their other backs.
The Falcons did add some more fire power to an already good offense by drafting Calvin Ridley but Matt Ryan is a QB that needs time in the pocket to perform at his top level and that is just something that he will not have. The Eagles defensive line is ridiculously good. The best in the league in my opinion. They should give Matt Ryan trouble all day long. This defensive line features Brandon Graham, Derek Barnett, Michael t and Fletcher Cox just to name a few. Atlanta definitely wont be able to get their running game going either against this Eagles team which averaged allowing less than 80 yards per game on the ground. I believe Atlanta will have to get creative to move the ball effectively here which will be tough to do with it being the first game of the season and facing a defense like this.
I expect both defenses to play very aggressive. They will look to take time and space away from their opponents. When these two teams met in the playoffs last year neither team were able to do much offensively as the Eagles claimed a 15-10 win. Both teams should struggle to move the ball again making the under the best play.
